Today we tried explaining the concepts of Ash Wednesday, Lent & practicing charity or acts of service to a 5 yr old & almost 3 yr old. Tough audience. Our 5 yr old is a very sweet boy who enjoys helping others and often surprises us with his own ideas of random acts of kindness - it's amazing. So we thought this might all make sense but I think we lost them at the burning of palms for the ashes representing......pretty sure our daughter didn't catch any of it as she played with her dollie.
So we want back to the important message. How can we, as a family, commit to daily acts of charity for the next 40 days and 40 nights? They say it takes 21 repetitions to develop a habit so I'm hoping this will have a lasting effect on us.
Our first request from the kids was to "give food to people who don't have any".
For today, we've gathered some things from our own pantry to take down to church and will look into what's needed most at the Oregon Food Bank. We're also going to buy some Costco-sized packs of things like granola bars to keep in our cars for folks on the street.
